Wellborn Fence Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Wellborn fence installation in San Antonio typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full perimeter job, and most repairs or section replacements we can schedule within a few days, not weeks. If you’re reading this because a gate is dragging or a post is leaning after the last big storm, you’re in the right place. What usually happens is this: a gate stops latching, a corner post starts tilting, or a bottom rail has pulled loose from the post. Sometimes it’s a single failed component. Sometimes it’s a series of small failures that add up to a fence that’s no longer holding the line.

We stock a range of Wellborn-compatible fence hardware and lumber on our trucks in San Antonio, and we’ll match what’s on your fence now. One thing before we get into specifics: Mason Remodeling Co San Antonio is an independent service provider, not a Wellborn dealer or affiliate, and never has been. But we’ve installed and repaired enough Wellborn fence systems across San Antonio neighborhoods that we know what fails, why it fails, and what actually fixes it. If you’d rather talk it through right now, call (254) 269-5071 and a person answers. No phone tree.

Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn fence systems in the San Antonio market fall into three broad categories: wood privacy fences (6-foot and 8-foot), semi-privacy “shadowbox” styles, and ranch-rail or estate-style post-and-rail configurations. The hardware kits are not interchangeable across those lines, and that’s where we see a lot of DIY purchases go wrong. A hinge that fits a 2×4 shadowbox rail will not seat correctly on a 4×4 privacy-fence rail without shimming, and shimming a gate hinge is a bad idea that shortens the life of the whole gate assembly.

Before you buy any replacement part, check the fence line. On most Wellborn systems, there’s a small aluminum tag stapled to one of the gate rails or pressed into the top of a corner post cap. That tag usually carries a series number and a build date. If the tag is gone, measure the rail width exactly. Wellborn gates built after roughly 2012 use a 1-5/8 inch top and bottom rail. Older systems used a 1-3/8 inch rail. That quarter inch difference sounds small, but it changes the hinge footprint and the post bracket offsets. For hardware, we typically recommend OEM Wellborn components when you’re replacing hinges or a latch on a gate that’s less than ten years old. After that, a quality aftermarket heavy-gauge bracket often outperforms the original at a lower cost. We’ll show you both prices before we order anything.

Signs Your Wellborn Fence Installation Is Failing

  • The gate drags or scrapes at the latch side. This almost always means the top hinge has pulled away from the post by a fraction of an inch, usually because the original screws were too short for the post diameter. The gate’s full weight now hangs on the bottom hinge, which will follow the same failure pattern within a season.
  • A post leans in one direction while the rail stays straight. In San Antonio’s clay-heavy soil, post bases settle unevenly after heavy rain cycles. The post itself may be sound, but the concrete collar around it has cracked and shifted. We can sometimes re-set a post without replacing the panel.
  • The bottom rail has separated from the post face. This is the classic Wellborn failure in our area. Water pools at the post-rail junction, the wood swells and contracts through our hot, dry summers, and the original galvanized bracket eventually lets go. It looks like a nail popped, but it’s usually a failed bracket or a stripped screw hole that’s been wallowed out over years of thermal cycling.
  • The latch catches but doesn’t hold under pressure. The strike plate has drifted out of alignment, or the internal spring in the latch body has failed. A dead spring means the latch arm won’t return after you pull it, and the gate will bounce open in the wind.
  • You can see daylight through the pickets from more than a few feet away. This one’s straightforward: the pickets themselves are cupping, splitting, or pulling free of the rails. It’s rarely just cosmetic. When pickets gap that wide, the rails are often compromised too, and you’re looking at partial or full panel replacement rather than a hardware fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A galley kitchen opened up to the dining room with a new peninsula

In San Antonio, a full Wellborn-compatible fence installation runs between $3,500 and $9,000 depending on linear footage, gate count, post condition, and whether we’re pulling a permit. Section replacements where the posts are still sound run lower, usually in the $800 to $2,500 range for a typical San Antonio yard. Hardware-only repairs like a hinge or latch swap typically land between $150 and $400 installed.

What drives the range is honest, and we’ll tell you before we quote: removing and hauling off an old fence costs money. Concrete footings that need breaking out cost more than ones we can re-use. A gate with rot at the hinge-side stile sometimes makes more sense to rebuild than patch. You’ll get a written line-item price before any work starts, not a verbal estimate that drifts. Every fence and gate repair we complete in San Antonio carries a 365-day warranty from the completion date. If it fails within that year, we return and fix it at no charge. No dispute process, no conditions.

DIY or Call Us?

For a hardware-only fix where the post is solid and the gate still hangs square, a patient homeowner can absolutely replace a hinge or a latch. Mark the old hardware position with painter’s tape before you remove it, use galvanized or stainless screws sized a half-inch longer than the originals, and pre-drill every hole. That solves about half of what we get called out for.

Where we’d say stop and call: any post that moves when you push on it, any gate that’s racked more than an inch out of square, or any fence section spanning more than eight feet that’s carrying sag. Those jobs involve digging, concrete, and weight, and in San Antonio, the summer heat turns a two-hour repair into a six-hour ordeal fast. Know who’s coming, know what it costs, know it’s covered, that’s the whole job before the job starts. If you’d rather hand it to us, call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll give you a free written estimate.
