Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
A full Schluter-system kitchen remodel in San Antonio typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on kitchen size, layout changes, and which Schluter waterproofing and uncoupling products the job requires. We stock Schluter membranes, profiles, and trim on our trucks, and we match replacement parts to your existing system the same visit we diagnose it. If you’ve got a cracked tile, a failing edge, or water working its way under your flooring around the sink or dishwasher, you’re probably looking at a Schluter component that wore out or was installed wrong the first time.
Most San Antonio homeowners find out a Schluter part has failed the subtle way: grout keeps cracking in the same line, a metal edge profile starts lifting at one end, or there’s a soft spot in the floor near the island. By the time you can see it, the waterproofing layer underneath may already be compromised. That’s the part that matters more than the tile on top.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a full system, not one product, and the part you need depends on which system is under your kitchen floor. The big three we work with daily across San Antonio are the Ditra uncoupling membrane (used under tile to keep slab movement from cracking it), the Kerdi waterproofing membrane (used at kitchen backsplashes, sink walls, and any wet zone), and Schluter’s metal and PVC edge profiles like Schiene and Rondec. Each has a specific series, height, and finish code stamped or printed on the product itself.
If you’ve got a failing edge profile, the identifying mark is usually on the underside or the mounting leg: a series letter plus a profile height in millimeters. A Schiene E6, for example, is a 6mm edge. Don’t guess at it. A profile that’s 1mm too short leaves the tile edge exposed and catches every sock, mop, and bare foot that passes by. A Ditra or Kerdi membrane failure is usually a seam issue: the Kerdi-Band overlap wasn’t bonded properly, or a previous installer cut the mat too short and left a gap where the flooring meets the cabinet toe kick. Schluter only warranties its system when installed with unmodified thin-set mortar, so if a remodel used premixed mastic under Ditra, the membrane can delaminate from the subfloor within a few years. That’s a specific failure we see in older San Antonio kitchens more than anyone would like.
Mason Remodeling Co San Antonio is an independent contractor, not a Schluter dealer or affiliate. That matters because we’ll tell you honestly when a quality aftermarket profile or compatible membrane does the same job, and when it’s smarter to stay with Schluter’s own part. For waterproofing, stay with Schluter or an approved equivalent. For edge trim, aftermarket aluminum profiles from reputable manufacturers hold up fine and can cut the part cost by 30 to 40 percent.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Cracks running in straight lines through the tile. Straight-line cracks usually mean the floor is moving under the tile and the Schluter uncoupling membrane either wasn’t installed, wasn’t extended far enough, or has a seam that has failed. Diagonal or random cracks more often point to a subfloor deflection problem.
- Loose or hollow-sounding tiles near the sink and dishwasher. Tap the tile face. A hollow sound means the tile has debonded from the membrane. In kitchens, that’s almost always water intrusion through a seam or an edge that wasn’t sealed, and San Antonio’s hard water makes the deterioration worse over time.
- Edge profile lifting or separating from the tile. A Schiene or Rondec profile is mechanically anchored but bonded with thin-set. When it starts lifting at the doorway transition or the island toe kick, the anchoring leg is corroded or the thin-set bond failed. Fixing it early avoids a tripping edge and a torn tile line.
- Grout cracking repeatedly in the same joint even after regrouting. When you regrout and the same crack comes back within a few months, the problem is under the tile, not in the grout. Re-grouting over a failed membrane is just paying for a symptom. The membrane seam underneath needs repair.
- Water staining or buckling at the tile-to-floor transition near the exterior door. San Antonio’s temperature swings from 100-plus summers to the occasional freeze cycle expand and contract every installed tile assembly. Water seeping at the door transition will show up as dark staining, and by then the Kerdi-Band has likely failed at the threshold.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Replacing a failed Schluter component in a San Antonio kitchen depends on whether we’re talking about one edge profile or a section of failed membrane under your tile. A single profile replacement with matching finish and height typically runs $150 to $400 including the part, mortar, and labor. A section of failed Ditra or Kerdi membrane repair under a tiled floor or backsplash runs $400 to $1,800 depending on how much tile has to come up and whether cabinetry needs to be temporarily removed to reach the seam. A full Schluter-system kitchen remodel runs $14,000 to $45,000, and that includes demolition, membrane installation, tile or flooring, edge profiles, and the written scope before any work starts.
The price driver is access: a profile replacement at a doorway is quick. A membrane repair under the island or behind a sink cabinet means pulling and resetting tile in a pattern that matches. We give every San Antonio customer a written price before any work begins, and that price includes the part, the labor, the mortar, and disposal. No add-ons after the fact. The workmanship is covered for 365 days from the completion date under our Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year, we fix it at no cost.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely check a few things before picking up the phone. Run your hand along every edge profile: if one end lifts, note which series and height it is. Tap the tiles you suspect are loose with a coin and listen for hollow spots. Check the grout lines that run parallel to the cabinet toe kicks and the exterior door. Those tell you the pattern of the failure. What a homeowner shouldn’t do is pull up tile bonded to a Schluter membrane to see what’s underneath. Once the waterproofing layer is cut or torn, you’ve turned a repairable seam into a full removal, and you’ll likely damage the membrane beyond any reasonable repair. If any part of the floor has a soft spot, stop using that section immediately and call us: that’s a subfloor or membrane failure, and it will get worse every day it’s walked on.

FAQs

A properly installed Schluter system in a San Antonio kitchen should last 25 to 40 years or more, but the install quality and local conditions determine everything. Hard water mineral deposits, wide annual temperature swings, and slab movement from our expansive clay soils all stress the membrane and edge profiles. The most common early failure is seam separation from improper thin-set coverage at installation. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll inspect the seams that are most likely to fail and give you an honest condition report.
Yes, many Schluter membrane failures can be repaired in place. A failed seam can often have a new piece of Kerdi-Band bonded over the old one with a proper 2-inch overlap, and small membrane tears can be patched with a Schluter-approved patch as long as the underlying subfloor is sound. The tile still has to be removed to reach the seam, but the membrane itself often does not need full replacement. We’ll tell you which applies once we see under the tile.
A simple edge profile replacement takes 1 to 2 hours once we have the correct profile in hand. A membrane seam repair under tile takes 1 to 2 days depending on whether we need to match a tile pattern and how much tile has to come up to reach the failed seam. We’ll give you a clear timeline in the written estimate before we start.
We keep common Schluter edge profiles, Kerdi-Band, fasteners, and thin-set mortar on our trucks, and our San Antonio suppliers carry the full Schluter line locally. Most parts can be sourced same-day or next day. If you need a less common profile finish or a specific membrane size, we’ll order it and have it ready for the scheduled repair date.
We install and stock parts for KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops, and most major kitchen fixture lines alongside Schluter systems. When a kitchen remodel involves a Schluter flooring or waterproofing failure, we can repair that component and replace any connected cabinetry or countertop materials during the same project. Isaac Pruett and our crew have handled hundreds of San Antonio kitchen rebuilds, and we will always write the full scope and price before work begins.
