Schluter Fence Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
Schluter fence installation in San Antonio typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a complete perimeter job, and we stock the most common Schluter-compatible trim and edge profiles on our trucks for same-week scheduling. Most homeowners discover they need this work when they notice the metal edge trim where tile meets a fence-adjacent wall or patio surface has pulled loose, corroded, or started catching on shoes and mower wheels. If you’re seeing a bent or lifted Schluter strip along a fence line, a gate post that’s cracked the surrounding tile edge, or a transition profile that’s separated from the concrete, that’s the part failing, and it’s usually the first thing to go in Texas heat and humidity.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

This page covers installation and replacement of Schluter edge profiles, transition strips, and movement joints that run along fence perimeters, gate thresholds, and patio-to-fence transitions. The most common profiles we replace in San Antonio are Schluter-SCHIENE (straight edge trim), Schluter-RONDEC (rounded edge trim), and Schluter-DILEX (movement joint profiles), along with Schluter-DECO for decorative transitions where a fence line meets a tiled patio or walkway. Each profile has a specific height that must match your tile thickness, and getting this wrong is the single biggest compatibility mistake we see from previous installs: a 3/8-inch profile under a 1/2-inch tile leaves an exposed edge that fails within a year.
For replacement, you’ve got two paths: OEM Schluter profiles (aluminum, stainless steel, or PVC depending on the series) or quality aftermarket equivalents. We install both. Where we draw the line is on generic hardware-store trim that isn’t rated for exterior use in Texas weather. Schluter’s aluminum profiles are anodized specifically to resist the alkaline conditions of exterior mortar and concrete, and the stainless options hold up to the humidity swings we get from spring through fall in San Antonio. A cheap uncoated aluminum strip will pit and corrode within two or three seasons here. If your existing profile is heavily pitted, that’s the tell: it wasn’t exterior-rated.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing before you order parts: Schluter PVC profiles (like the DILEX-EK series) are not interchangeable with the aluminum ones when it comes to the movement joint gap they’re rated for. The PVC versions tolerate more lateral movement, which matters in San Antonio’s expansive clay soils. If your fence posts sit on a slab that’s shifting seasonally, and you’ve got a rigid aluminum movement joint that keeps popping loose, that’s a spec mismatch, not a bad install. We’ll measure the joint gap and specify the right profile series for the actual movement your slab is seeing.

Signs Your Schluter Fence Installation Is Failing
- Lifted or separating edge trim along the fence line: The profile’s anchoring leg has broken free from the mortar bed. This usually starts at a corner or gate post where vibration and foot traffic concentrate stress. The profile isn’t necessarily bent yet, but it’s working its way out of the tile assembly.
- Corrosion or pitting on the visible metal surface: Original installs sometimes used interior-rated aluminum that was never meant for San Antonio’s humidity cycles. Once the anodized finish breaks down, the metal starts oxidizing and the profile loses its structural bond with the mortar.
- Gap widening at a movement joint near a fence post or gate: This is the Schluter telling you the slab sections are moving more than the profile was rated to handle. In San Antonio’s clay-heavy soils, fence posts and adjacent patio slabs move independently through wet and dry seasons, and a mismatched movement joint will show it here first.
- Tile cracking at the profile edge: When a profile’s anchoring leg fails, the tile loses its protected edge, and the first impact (a mower bump, a fence gate swinging into it, a dropped tool) cracks the tile corner. The tile didn’t fail first. The profile did.
- Water intrusion at a gate threshold transition: If you see efflorescence (that white chalky residue) along the Schluter strip where your gate closes, the profile has separated from the substrate and water is getting underneath. This one compounds fast in San Antonio because our freeze-thaw cycles, rare as they are, will heave a failed threshold joint within a season.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For full Schluter fence installation work in San Antonio, plan on $3,500 to $9,000 depending on the linear footage of the fence line, whether it’s a single profile run or a full perimeter with multiple transition types, and whether we’re pulling up and reinstalling tile or just replacing the profile itself. A single gate threshold or short transition section replacement typically lands at the lower end of that range. A full perimeter with movement joints, corner pieces, and tile edge work will push toward the upper end. The two biggest cost drivers are linear feet of profile and how much tile or concrete remediation the old profile’s failure has caused underneath.
Every quote includes the Schluter or aftermarket profile material, demolition of the failed part, substrate prep, mortar or adhesive, and a workmanship warranty on the install. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, and nothing changes on the invoice unless the scope genuinely changes. We also remind folks in San Antonio that the underlying cause, whether it’s slab movement or water intrusion, needs to be addressed at the same time as the part replacement, or you’ll be replacing the same profile again in two years.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re just trying to identify what failed, you can safely check three things: look for a part number stamped on the profile (Schluter stamps their profiles, usually near the edge), measure the tile thickness at the joint so you know what profile height you’re dealing with, and check whether the movement joint gap has widened from its original width. Those three observations will tell you a lot before anyone quotes the job. What we don’t recommend is pulling the profile yourself. Once you remove the failed Schluter strip, you’ve exposed raw tile edges that will get damaged the moment a gate swings or someone steps on them. And if the profile is embedded in a movement joint that’s actively shifting, re-setting it wrong doesn’t just fail cosmetically: it can bind the slab sections and crack the surrounding tile field.
For most San Antonio homeowners, this is one of those repairs where the diagnosis is cheap and the fix looks simple, but the failure mode is usually structural beneath the surface. If you’re not sure whether you’re fixing a part or a slab, call us at (254) 269-5071 and we’ll walk you through what we’re seeing before we ever schedule a visit.
FAQs

A properly specified Schluter profile, installed correctly against San Antonio’s climate and soil movement, should last 15 to 25 years as an exterior tile edge or transition. The profiles themselves don’t fail first: the surrounding tile assembly or the slab movement does. Cheap aftermarket aluminum that wasn’t exterior-rated can start pitting in as little as two to three years here. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your part was ever the right spec to begin with.
In most cases, no. Once the anchoring leg has broken free from the mortar bed or the profile has corroded, repair means removing it and setting a new one. There’s no adhesive that will reliably re-bond a failed profile into old mortar. There are a few exceptions where a section can be re-secured if the tile itself is intact and the profile hasn’t deformed, but those are rare. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll give you a straight answer based on what’s actually happening at the joint.
Most single-transition or gate-threshold replacements are done in one day, including removing the old profile, prepping the joint, and setting the new one. A full perimeter with tile remediation might run two to three days depending on how much substrate work is needed. We’ll tell you the schedule in the written quote, not after we’ve started.
We stock the most common Schluter profile heights and finishes on our trucks, including SCHIENE, RONDEC, and DILEX in the sizes we see most often in San Antonio homes. For less common series or specialty stainless finishes, we order directly from Schluter, and that adds about a week to the schedule. We’ll tell you on the first call whether your part is on the truck or needs to be ordered, so there’s no surprise. Call (254) 269-5071 for a free estimate.
