Moen Roofing: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If you have a Moen product tied to your roofing system and a part has failed, we can source the correct replacement and install it. Most Moen-related roofing issues in San Antonio, like vent flashing failures or skylight seal breakdowns, cost between $400 and $1,800 to fix, and we carry the common components on our trucks. The way most homeowners discover the problem is the same every time: a brown water stain on the ceiling that shows up after the first big rain in spring.
The Moen name in roofing usually means one of two things: a Moen skylight or a Moen bathroom exhaust fan that vents through the roof. Both have roof-side components that wear out long before the interior fixture does. In San Antonio’s heat, rubber gaskets crack in five to seven years. UV exposure at 95-plus degrees for four straight months does that to any flexible seal, regardless of brand. When that seal goes, water follows the path of least resistance down the vent pipe or skylight frame, and the ceiling stain is your first warning.
We’re an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Moen, but we’ve been repairing and replacing Moen roofing components in San Antonio for years, and we know which parts fail, which ones are worth salvaging, and which ones need to go in the dumpster.
Which Moen Models This Applies To

Moen’s roofing footprint breaks into two main categories. First: Moen skylights, including the tubular models like the Sun Tunnel series and the fixed curb-mounted units. Second: Moen bathroom exhaust fans that terminate through the roof, which includes the ducting, the roof cap, and the flashing assembly. The interior fan itself almost never fails first. It’s the roof cap that takes the beating.
The compatibility gotcha that trips up most San Antonio homeowners is this: Moen tubular skylights come in 10-inch and 14-inch diameters, and the flashing kits are not interchangeable. You can’t put 10-inch flashing on a 14-inch tube. The measurement that matters is the outside diameter of the rigid tube, not the ceiling diffuser, which is always wider. If you look at the tube from inside the attic and measure the metal pipe itself, you’ll know which kit to order.
For exhaust fan roof caps, Moen fans sold in Texas are typically ducted at 4-inch or 6-inch. The roof cap you choose has to match the duct diameter, but it should also be the insulated or dampered type, because San Antonio’s humid air backflows into cold attic ducts and condenses. Plain non-dampered caps rust out fast in our climate. We stock quality aftermarket caps that outperform the original Moen caps in the one spec that matters most here: UV resistance. The OEM Moen cap will last about six years on a south-facing San Antonio roof. A good aftermarket 316 stainless cap with an insulated damper can go ten or more. That’s the one case where we’ll steer you away from the OEM part on purpose.

Signs Your Moen Roofing Is Failing
- Water stain on the ceiling around the fixture. This means the roof flashing or cap seal has opened up. Water is running down the outside of the vent pipe or skylight tube and dripping off the drywall ring. The longer it goes, the wider the stain gets, and the more likely you’re looking at drywall repair on top of the roof fix.
- Condensation on the skylight dome in the morning. The interior seal has failed, letting humid attic air contact the dome. In San Antonio, where morning humidity runs high from April through October, this shows up as persistent fogging you can’t wipe away from inside.
- Rust streaks or brown staining on the roof cap. The galvanized coating has worn through, and the cap is oxidizing. Once rust pinholes form, water intrusion is a matter of weeks, not years. We see it most often on caps facing west, where the afternoon sun is the most punishing.
- Musty smell in the bathroom with the fan running. The roof cap damper has failed or the duct has separated at the roof penetration. The fan is now pulling attic air back down into the bathroom instead of pushing moist air out. That attic air is what you’re smelling.
- Skylight tube looks dim even at noon. Debris, algae, or a failed reflective liner is cutting light transmission. Older Moen tubular skylights have reflective liners that delaminate in high heat, and once that surface bubbles, it’s not worth repairing. The fix is a new tube section.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Antonio homeowners, a Moen exhaust fan roof cap replacement runs $400 to $900 installed. That includes the cap, the new flashing if the old one is rusted through, roofing sealant rated for Texas heat, and a waterproofing check on the surrounding shingles. A Moen skylight flashing replacement runs $600 to $2,500 depending on roof pitch, access, and whether we’re dealing with a curb-mounted or tubular unit. If the skylight dome itself is cracked, an aftermarket acrylic replacement dome starts around $900 installed on a standard San Antonio composition shingle roof.
What drives the range is roof pitch and penetration count. A steep roof with a 7:12 pitch costs more because safety equipment and harness setup take time. Two roof penetrations instead of one doubles the materials. We give you a written price before any work starts, and that price includes labor, materials, haul-away of the old part, and a 365-day guarantee from the completion date. No change orders, no surprise invoices at the end of the job.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely inspect a vent cap from the ground with binoculars: look for rust, missing rivets, or lifted flashing. You can also safely peek in the attic and check for water trails on the underside of the sheathing. What you should not do is carry a tube of roofing sealant up a ladder and try to seal around a skylight or a roof cap. Walking a roof requires the right shoes, the right harness, and enough experience to know where you can and can’t step on a San Antonio composition roof in August, which is when the shingles are soft enough to get torn up just by walking on them. If you patch a leak from the top without fixing the cause from the underside, the water just finds a new path. If the part failed once, it will fail again until it’s replaced. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll handle the roof work properly.
FAQs

A standard Moen exhaust fan roof cap lasts five to seven years in San Antonio before the galvanized coating fails, and a high-quality aftermarket 316 stainless cap can last ten or more. The UV load here is the primary factor, so any cap facing south or west will degrade faster than one facing north.
Small flashing lift can sometimes be resealed, but once a roof cap or skylight flashing shows rust-through, pinholes, or cracked rubber, it needs replacement. A sealant patch on rusted metal holds for a few weeks at best. We’ll tell you straight if a repair has a realistic chance of lasting, and if it won’t, we’ll say so.
Most single-penetration repairs take two to three hours from setup to cleanup, including a waterproofing check on the surrounding roof area. If we need to replace decking that has rotted from a long-running leak, the job extends to a half day or more, and we’ll tell you before we start.
We stock the most common 4-inch and 6-inch roof caps, flashing kits, and sealants on the truck, so most Moen exhaust fan repairs are completed in a single visit. Skylight domes and tubular flashing kits are ordered by size, which takes two to four business days from our parts suppliers in the San Antonio area.
