Boxabl Driveway & Pavers: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Boxabl-compatible driveway and paver systems across San Antonio, with typical installed paver driveways running $7,000 to $18,000 and concrete driveways from $4,500 to $12,000. Most Boxabl owners discover they need this work when their factory pad settles, cracks, or was never sized to handle Texas heat expansion. The quick version: if your Boxabl sits on a pad that’s shifting or spalling, you need someone who understands both the modular footprint and San Antonio’s clay soil, and we do.
Here’s how it usually plays out. The Boxabl arrives. The temporary pad or undersized driveway it was set on looks fine for the first season. Then the summer hits, the ground under one corner dries unevenly, and you’ve got a visible dip at the edge or a crack running toward the unit. We’ve seen it on lots across the city, from Stone Oak to Alamo Ranch. It’s not a Boxabl defect. It’s a foundation and hardscape problem that has to be solved with proper site prep and the right pavers or concrete mix for this climate.
Which Boxabl Models This Applies To

The driveway and paver work we do applies to every Boxabl Casita configuration, whether you have the standard 20×20 unit, the larger multi-module setup, or a custom site with accessory structures. Boxabl units ship on a steel frame that needs a level, well-drained surface under it. The driveway that leads to it is where San Antonio owners run into the most trouble, because that surface gets traffic, weather, and the same expanding clay soil that moves every other slab in Bexar County.
You can identify what you’re working with by checking the site plan that came with your Boxabl order. It lists the pad dimensions and the recommended setback from the unit. If you don’t have that paperwork, measure the width of your driveway at its narrowest point. Most Boxabl driveways we replace in San Antonio run 10 to 12 feet wide for a single Casita, which fits standard paver patterns. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Boxabl doesn’t manufacture pavers or driveway concrete, so there’s no OEM part to match. The decision is whether you want contractor-grade materials like Belgard or Techo-Bloc pavers, or a properly mixed and reinforced concrete pour. Both work. What matters is what’s underneath them. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Boxabl, and we’re upfront about that. We fix the site so the unit stays stable.

Signs Your Boxabl Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- Cracking at the edges of the driveway, especially near the unit. This happens when the pad wasn’t poured with proper expansion joints, or the base material under it has washed out. San Antonio’s clay soil expands when wet and contracts when dry, and that cycle will crack an undersized slab within two or three years.
- Visible sinking or pooling water in the middle of the driveway. That’s a base failure. Water is getting under the pavers or slab and eroding the sub-base. Every rainstorm makes the low spot worse, and it’s usually worse near Boxabl downspouts if gutters aren’t installed or routed far enough from the pad.
- Paver movement: individual pavers shifting, rocking, or separating. This is almost always an edge-restraint problem or a bad sand bed. A paver that rocks underfoot means the bedding layer was installed too thick or too thin. We see it most often on DIY driveway jobs and cut-rate installs where the base was only 2 or 3 inches deep instead of the 6 to 8 inches San Antonio soil demands.
- White chalky film or flaking on the concrete surface. That’s spalling, and in San Antonio it’s usually driven by a combination of freeze-thaw cycles (rare but real in January) and de-icing salts or fertilizers that get tracked onto the driveway. Once the surface starts flaking, it’s not going to heal. It needs a structural fix, not a coat of sealer.
- Gap opening between the driveway and the Boxabl frame or steps. That gap is the clearest signal that the pad has moved since installation. A stable slab doesn’t separate from a fixed point. Ignoring it means water runs down that gap, erodes the base under the frame, and you end up with the Boxabl itself out of level.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Boxabl driveway and paver work in San Antonio, here’s what the numbers actually look like. Paver driveway installation runs $7,000 to $18,000, with most standard Casita driveways landing around $10,000 to $14,000 depending on the paver line and the amount of excavation. Concrete driveway installation is $4,500 to $12,000, and if the existing pad just needs a full tear-out and replace, a driveway replacement typically falls between $5,000 and $14,000. Paver patio work, which many Boxabl owners add as a small outdoor sitting area, runs $3,500 to $11,000.
What drives the range is mostly what’s under the surface. A job where the original base is stable and we can overlay new pavers costs less than a job where we’re excavating 12 inches of failed soil, hauling it off, and rebuilding a proper base from scratch. Every quote we give is a written price before any work starts, and it includes demolition, haul-off, base material, the pavers or concrete itself, edge restraints, drainage corrections, and a written guarantee. We don’t do verbal estimates that grow. What we quote is what you pay. The work is warrantied for 365 days from the completion date under our Done Right Promise: if it isn’t right within a year, we make it right at no cost.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely spot-check your driveway without calling anyone. Look at the edges, check for ponding after rain, tap a few pavers with your heel to see if they rock. That’s useful. What you shouldn’t do is try to tear out and re-pour a concrete driveway or reset a paver field next to a Boxabl unit yourself. The risk isn’t injury on this one, it’s structural: if you dig out the base beside the unit and get the drainage wrong, you can undermine the pad the Boxabl sits on. Then you’ve got a worse problem than a cracked driveway.
The part most owners get wrong is base depth. A San Antonio driveway needs a compacted base of 6 to 8 inches for pavers, not the 3 to 4 inches you’ll see in a YouTube tutorial filmed in Florida or Arizona. Our crew does this work every week across Bexar County, and Isaac Pruett has seen enough failed bases on San Antonio jobs to know exactly what the soil does after a heavy July rain. We’ll get it right the first time. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll come take a look, give you a written price, and you decide from there.
FAQs

A properly built paver driveway in San Antonio should last 25 to 30 years with occasional joint sand top-ups, and a well-poured concrete driveway should give you 20 to 25 years. The ones that fail at year two or three almost always have a shallow base or no expansion joints. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll tell you honestly which situation you’re in.
Small paver sections can often be lifted, re-bedded, and restored without replacing the whole driveway, especially if the base is still solid. Concrete is a different story: once a slab has spalled or shifted, patching buys you a year or two at most. We’ll tell you which applies to your site, and the quote covers repair or replacement, whatever the driveway actually needs.
Most Boxabl driveway replacements in San Antonio take 3 to 5 working days from tear-out to a finished, walkable surface. Weather can stretch that, and we’ll tell you up front if the forecast looks rough. You’ll have a written schedule before we start, and you’ll know exactly who is coming each day.
We keep common Belgard and Techo-Bloc paver lines available through local San Antonio supply partners, so most standard styles can be on site within a few days. Specialty colors or patterns may add a week. We’ll bring samples to your home so you can see them in your actual light before you pick.
