Quikrete Driveway & Pavers: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Quikrete driveway and paver work in San Antonio typically runs $7,000 to $18,000 installed for a full paver driveway, while concrete driveway installation lands between $4,500 and $12,000 depending on square footage, site prep, and the specific Quikrete mix or paver line you choose. We keep Quikrete-compatible pavers, jointing sand, edge restraints, and base material on our trucks for most San Antonio neighborhoods, so a crew can usually start the same week you call. Most owners realize something’s wrong when they spot pavers shifting out of level, a concrete slab showing spalling or hairline cracks that widen after rain, or sand washing out from between joints every time a heavy Texas storm rolls through. The failure rarely starts with the surface itself. It starts underneath, in the base.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete splits its driveway and paver products into two broad camps, and mixing them up causes most of the do-overs we see. There’s the bagged concrete line, including Quikrete 5000 and Crack-Resistant Concrete Mix, which we pour for slab driveways and as a setting bed under pavers. Then there’s the paver-specific line: Quikrete Paver Base, Quikrete PowerLoc Jointing Sand, and Quikrete Patio Paver Jointing Sand. The compatibility gotcha is the jointing sand. PowerLoc is a polymer sand that sets up firm after water activation and holds up to San Antonio’s summer downpours. The regular jointing sand is looser and cheaper, but it washes out of half-inch joints fast on a sloped driveway. If your original install used the wrong sand, no paver will stay locked. We identify the right product by reading the bag label or checking the paver thickness. Most driveway pavers need to be at least 60mm thick for vehicle traffic. The 30mm paver is for patios and walkways only, and it will crack under a pickup truck’s weight within two years here. Aftermarket pavers from Belgard, Unilock, and Techo-Bloc are fine substitutes when we match the dimensional spec. For bagged mixes, we stick with Quikrete itself because the cure time and compressive strength ratings are predictable, and we’ve poured enough of it across San Antonio to know exactly how it behaves in our clay-heavy soil.

Signs Your Quikrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers rocking underfoot or under tires. This means the base has settled or eroded in pockets. Sometimes it’s the clay soil shifting during a dry spell; other times it’s water sneaking through a failed joint and washing the fines out. Either way, the paver is a symptom, not the cause.
  • Joint sand disappearing after every rain. If you can sweep a finger’s width gap between pavers after a storm, the sand is wrong for the slope or the edge restraint has let go. In Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills, where driveways slope toward the street, this is the most common Quikrete failure we see.
  • Concrete surface flaking or pitting. Spalling on a Quikrete slab usually traces back to too much water in the mix at pour time or a freeze-thaw cycle, but in San Antonio it’s more often chloride damage from lawn chemicals sitting on the surface. Small pits turn into craters once limestone aggregate starts popping loose.
  • Hairline cracks that grow after every hot summer. Our clay soil expands and contracts violently. A crack that stays hairline through one summer may open to a quarter inch the next. If you can slip a nickel into the crack, water is getting under the slab and accelerating the failure.
  • Edges crumbling where the driveway meets the lawn. This is an edge restraint problem on paver jobs or a missing expansion joint on concrete pours. Without a clean boundary, vehicle pressure pushes pavers outward and the whole field loosens from the outside in.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Antonio homeowners, a full paver driveway replacement runs $7,000 to $18,000 installed. The spread comes down to three things: square footage, base depth, and whether we’re reusing any existing material. If the old base is still sound, we can sometimes save $1,500 to $3,000 by re-grading and topping it instead of hauling everything out. If we’re pulling up a failed concrete slab to replace it with pavers, add $4,500 to $12,000 for demolition and repour of any concrete portions. Every quote includes line-item pricing for the pavers, base material, joint sand, edge restraints, labor, and haul-away. We put it in writing before a single tool comes off the truck, and if the price changes, you’ll know why before we proceed. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation: if something isn’t right within a year of completion, we come back and make it right at no cost. Isaac Pruett checks every driveway scope himself before it goes to the crew, because getting the grade and the base depth right is the difference between a driveway that lasts 20 years and one that shifts in 18 months.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check a few things on a Quikrete driveway: whether water pools anywhere after rain, whether pavers are visibly rocking, whether joint sand is gone, and whether the edges have migrated. You can also snap photos and measurements before calling, which helps us quote faster. What you shouldn’t DIY is pulling up pavers to rebuild the base, re-grading a settled slab, or mixing and pouring a new Quikrete driveway on a slope. A truckload of bagged concrete dumped wrong in San Antonio clay creates a cracked, low-spot slab that then costs twice as much to tear out. Base failure is the expensive part of this repair, not the pavers, and fixing it requires compaction equipment and drainage knowledge. If your pavers are shifting in a Newton or Stone Oak driveway, call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll look at it with you before you spend a weekend fighting a problem that starts three feet underground.
