Quikrete Bathroom Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

If you’re planning a bathroom remodel in San Antonio using Quikrete products, a full bathroom remodel typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, and we work with Quikrete materials on shower pans, tub surrounds, and waterproofing systems regularly. Most homeowners call us after they’ve torn out an old shower and hit a failed mortar bed, or after water has gotten behind tile and rotted the substrate. The Quikrete part of the equation is usually the foundation of the wet area: the mortar bed under the tile, the concrete backer board, or the waterproofing layer that sits between the concrete and the finished surface. We stock Quikrete-compatible materials on our trucks and can match what you already have on site.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete makes a range of bathroom-ready products, and the compatibility question depends on which one failed. The most common in San Antonio bathrooms are Quikrete Floor Mud (used to slope shower pans toward the drain), Quikrete Sand/Topping Mix (used for thicker mortar beds), and Quikrete Concrete Backer Board or its equivalent used behind tile in wet areas. If you have an older shower, the original mortar bed may date back decades and could be a sand-and-cement mix that’s no longer made the same way. The OEM-versus-aftermarket question matters less with Quikrete than it does with a branded fixture. Quikrete products are the aftermarket standard; the real decision is whether you need a dry-pack mortar bed, a self-leveling underlayment, or a board replacement. A check of the bag or board edge for the product name and PSI rating tells us what was used. If it’s not legible, a small core sample from the mortar bed tells us the ratio and strength. That’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: matching the new mortar strength to the old substrate so the tile doesn’t crack at the transition.

One more thing worth knowing in San Antonio specifically. Our soil shifts. A mortar bed that worked fine in a slab home in Alamo Heights will behave differently in a pier-and-beam house near Monte Vista where there’s movement under the floor. We account for that when we spec the Quikrete product and the thickness of the bed.

Signs Your Quikrete Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

The mortar bed or backer board almost never fails on its own. Something above it lets water through, and the concrete underneath starts breaking down. Here’s what homeowners in San Antonio actually see before they call us:

  • Tile cracking in a spiderweb pattern around the drain. The mortar bed underneath has eroded or settled, leaving the tile unsupported. Water has been working its way through the grout for a while.
  • A musty smell you can’t find the source of. Water is sitting in the mortar bed or behind the backer board. In San Antonio’s humidity, that smell never dries out on its own; it just migrates.
  • Grout that stays dark after it dries. That’s trapped moisture, not staining. The waterproofing layer between the tile and the Quikrete bed has failed somewhere, and the grout is wicking the water.
  • Soft spots in the shower floor or near the tub edge. The mortar bed has crumbled or the backer board has swollen. You shouldn’t feel any movement or sponginess under tile.
  • Water staining on the ceiling below a second-floor bathroom. By this point the bed has been saturated for weeks. The leak is through the mortar, not around the drain flange where everyone looks first.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A bathroom remodel in San Antonio that involves Quikrete-compatible work runs $9,000 to $28,000 depending on scope. A full gut with new mortar bed, backer board, waterproofing, tile, fixtures, and vanity lands on the upper end. A smaller job where we’re just replacing a failed shower pan and re-tiling runs closer to the bottom of that range, and a small bathroom remodel starts around $5,000. The Quikrete materials themselves are not the expensive line item. The labor to demo, haul, slope, cure, and re-tile is where the money goes, and that labor is priced so you know the number before a single tool is unpacked. Every Mason Remodeling project gets a written price before work starts. No verbal estimates that grow on the final bill. The workmanship is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something’s not right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost.

DIY or Call Us?

Mixing Quikrete in a bucket is simple. Sloping a mortar bed so water drains correctly, bonding it to a substrate that moves, and waterproofing it so that ten years from now there’s no rot behind your tile is not simple. That’s the honest split. You can absolutely remove the old tile and inspect what’s underneath. You can check whether the bed is crumbling by pressing a screwdriver into a visible crack. What you shouldn’t do is chip out a mortar bed and pour a new one without getting the slope, the weep holes at the drain, and the waterproofing membrane exactly right, because a shower pan that holds water instead of shedding it will rot your floor joists before you ever see a crack. If you’ve got water damage or you’re not sure what’s holding the tile up, call us at (254) 269-5071 and we’ll look for free.
