Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If you have an Oldcastle paver driveway or patio and a section has failed, we stock Oldcastle-compatible replacement pavers and can match your existing pattern, color, and size. Installed paver replacement in San Antonio typically runs $700 – $3,500 depending on how many square feet are affected and whether the base needs rebuilding. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a paver sinks after heavy rain, a corner crumbles under a garbage bin, or a tree root finally wins the fight it’s been losing for five years.
We’re an independent San Antonio contractor, not an Oldcastle dealer. That means we’re free to tell you the truth about what’s worth fixing, what’s worth replacing, and whether the part you need is even the real problem.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle’s paving products are sold under a few lines you’ll recognize: Belgard (their residential hardscape brand), Echelon (commercial and architectural pavers), and Anchor (concrete block and retaining wall systems). For driveways, Belgard is what you’re most likely dealing with. The key compatibility factor isn’t the paver’s name, it’s three measurements: the paver’s actual dimensions, its thickness, and the face style.
Here’s the gotcha most San Antonio homeowners hit: Oldcastle pavers are made in regional plants, and the same Belgard style can vary slightly in color from batch to batch. What you bought in 2018 from one distributor may not be a perfect visual match to what’s in stock today. For a driveway repair, that’s usually fine, pavers weather and fade anyway. For a patio where you want seamless color, you’ll want us to pull a sample and match it against your existing stones before we order anything. Thickness is the non-negotiable: driveway pavers must be 60mm or thicker in San Antonio’s clay-heavy soil. A 40mm paver on a driveway is a future sinkhole, full stop.
OEM versus aftermarket: for Oldcastle/Belgard, we almost always recommend staying with OEM pavers. Aftermarket lookalikes are cheaper but fade differently under San Antonio sun, and the dimensional tolerances drift enough that seams stop lining up by year three. For the base material underneath, we use locally quarried crushed limestone – it’s better suited to our soil than what Oldcastle ships from out of state, and it costs less to haul.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- Sinking or low spots that hold water after rain. This is almost never a paver problem – it’s base failure beneath. San Antonio’s clay soil expands and contracts so aggressively that a poorly compacted base will shift within two seasons.
- Crumbling edges or corners on individual pavers. This is usually freeze-thaw or point-load damage. A paver with a hairline crack soaks up water, and when we get a hard freeze, that water expands and the edge pops off.
- Gaps opening between pavers that widen over time. Your edge restraint is failing. Without a solid border holding the field together, the whole pattern slowly migrates outward like a slow-motion landslide.
- White, chalky haze on the paver surface. This is efflorescence – mineral salts wicking up through the paver from moisture below. It’s cosmetic but it tells you water is sitting under the pavers instead of draining through the base.
- Weeds or ants pushing up through the joints. The joint sand has washed out. In San Antonio’s fire-ant territory, this goes from cosmetic to painful in about a week.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a small repair, usually 20 to 100 square feet, you’re looking at $700 – $2,000 installed in San Antonio. That includes pulling the failed pavers, inspecting and recompacting the base, replacing damaged pavers with matched Oldcastle product, and re-sanding the joints. If the base itself has failed, which is the case more often than not in San Antonio’s shifting clay, you’re in the $2,000 – $3,500 range because we’re excavating down 6 to 8 inches, rebuilding the base properly, and then reinstalling the pavers on top.
What drives the price: square footage, access (machinery or hand-carry), whether we’re matching an existing pattern versus starting fresh, and whether the base needs full reconstruction. Every quote we give includes the full parts-and-labor breakdown, so you see exactly what the pavers cost and exactly what the labor costs. No lump sum, no mystery line item. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if the repair fails within a year, we fix it at no cost. Isaac Pruett has been reading San Antonio soil long enough to know that a paver repair is only as good as what’s underneath it.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely handle one thing yourself: pulling up the loose paver and looking at the base underneath. If the base material is still solid and level, a YouTube tutorial and a bag of polymeric sand might get you through. That’s the honest answer.
Here’s where it goes wrong. If the base has failed, and you just re-set the paver on top, you’ve bought yourself six months before it sinks again. If you’re dealing with a driveway, the pavers weigh 20 to 30 pounds each and getting them back in level and tight is back-breaking work. And if you’re trying to match Oldcastle color from a photo on a website, that paver will be the wrong shade the second it arrives. If any of that sounds like your situation, call us at (254) 269-5071. We’ll come look, tell you what’s actually wrong, and give you a written price before any work starts.
FAQs

With a properly built base, Oldcastle pavers last 25 to 40 years in San Antonio. The pavers themselves rarely fail, what fails is the base underneath them. Get the base right and the driveway outlives the house’s roof.
We repair sections all the time. As long as the surrounding pavers are in good shape and we can match the color reasonably well, a section repair is perfectly fine. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your driveway is a repair or a replace.
Most section repairs take one day. Full base reconstruction for a failed section takes two to three days, including compaction and settling time before we re-set the pavers. You’ll know the timeline before we start, in writing.
We keep common Belgard and Oldcastle-compatible pavers on hand for the most popular San Antonio styles, and we order specific colors and patterns from local distributors with a 3-5 day lead time. We’ll confirm the exact match against your existing pavers before anything is ordered. We also work with other hardscape brands including KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for larger project needs.
Know who’s coming, know what it costs, know it’s covered – that’s the whole job before the job starts. If your Oldcastle driveway or patio needs work, call (254) 269-5071. We’ll send someone who can assess it properly, and you’ll have a written price before any tool is unpacked.
