CWS Kitchen Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If your CWS kitchen has a failed cabinet hinge, a warped drawer front, a delaminating countertop edge, or hardware that no longer catches, we can match and install the right replacement. A full CWS-compatible kitchen remodel in San Antonio typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, while targeted part replacements like hinges, slides, drawer boxes, or a replacement door run far less, often $200 – $1,800 depending on the part and finish. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a drawer that suddenly won’t close flush, a door that sags by a quarter inch, or a soft-close mechanism that stopped soft-closing months ago and now slams.
We’re an independent San Antonio remodeling company. We’re not affiliated with CWS, but we’ve worked on enough CWS kitchens across this city to know exactly which parts fail, which ones are worth repairing, and when a full remodel costs less than chasing individual fixes.
Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS cabinetry shows up in a lot of San Antonio homes, and the part compatibility mostly comes down to three things: hinge type, drawer slide style, and door profile. The hinge is the easiest tell. Most CWS cabinets use either a standard 35mm cup concealed hinge (Compact or Clip style) or a 26mm mini hinge on slimmer door profiles. Flip a door open and look at the inside edge of the cabinet frame, you’ll see the cup diameter stamped or easily measured. Get that wrong and the door sits proud of the frame by a few millimeters, which drives homeowners crazy.
The drawer slide is the second gotcha. CWS lines vary between three-quarter extension epoxy-coated slides and full-extension ball-bearing slides. If you order a three-quarter replacement for a full-extension drawer, you lose the last few inches of drawer access, and nobody notices until the silverware tray won’t come out far enough to reach the back. When we come out, we measure the slide length, the mounting position (side-mounted versus under-mounted), and the clip style before quoting a replacement. We also match drawer box thickness, because some CWS lines used five-eighth-inch drawer boxes and replacements from a big-box store assume half-inch stock, which changes how the slide brackets seat.
For finishes, CWS white thermofoil doors from the mid-2000s through mid-2010s are notorious in Texas for heat-related peeling along the bottom rail, especially in kitchens with a west-facing window or a dishwasher vent nearby. A quality aftermarket painted MDF door will hold up better in San Antonio’s heat than reordering the same thermofoil. We’ll tell you honestly when a part is worth the OEM price and when the aftermarket equivalent is actually the better long-term call.

Signs Your CWS Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Drawers that slam or won’t stay closed. The soft-close mechanism inside the slide has a small plastic buffer that cracks with repeated heat cycling. Once it splits, the drawer closes hard no matter how gently you push it. This is the single most common CWS failure we see in San Antonio homes, and it’s usually a slide replacement, not a full drawer box repair.
- Doors that sag or rub at the top or bottom corner. Over years of humidity swings, the hinge screws in the cabinet frame wallow out. The door drops a fraction of an inch and starts scraping its neighbor. A homeowner can tighten the screw once, but once the hole is stripped, it needs a dowel-and-redrill fix or a hinge plate replacement with longer screws.
- Thermofoil peeling or bubbling on door and drawer faces. This is heat delamination, and it’s very common in San Antonio, where north-facing kitchens get cooler but south- or west-facing runs bake. Once the vinyl starts separating from the MDF core, there’s no reliable glue fix. The door or drawer front gets replaced, and we typically recommend painted MDF or solid wood as the replacement material rather than another thermofoil layer that will peel again.
- Drawer boxes that rack or bind partway out. The box corner joinery has loosened, usually from years of heavy pots and pans. A racked drawer chews up slides fast, so by the time the homeowner notices, both the box and the slides usually need attention. This is a good moment to assess whether a partial refresh of the lower cabinets makes more sense than repeated one-off fixes.
- Soft-close hinges that click or no longer hold the door in the open position. The internal spring in the hinge arm fatigues. The door still opens and closes, but it feels bouncy, and it won’t hover open at the right angle. Hinge failure usually bunches up, if two or three fail in the same run, we recommend replacing the full hinge set on that cabinet so the feel stays consistent.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a CWS kitchen, the cost depends on whether you’re replacing a handful of parts or rebuilding the whole room. Here’s what we tell San Antonio homeowners to plan for:
- Hinge or slide replacement: $200 – $700, including the parts, adjusting every door and drawer on that cabinet run, and removing the old hardware. Small parts, small labor window, but it makes the kitchen feel new again.
- Door or drawer-front replacement: $150 – $450 per door depending on size and finish, painted or wood. If we’re replacing more than five doors, a full refacing conversation starts to make sense.
- Cabinet refacing (new doors, drawer fronts, veneer on the boxes): $4,000 – $13,000 for the full kitchen. We keep the existing boxes where they’re structurally sound and replace the worn parts. Installation is two to four days.
- Full kitchen remodel with CWS-compatible cabinetry, counters, and hardware: $14,000 – $45,000. The range is wide because a 10×10 kitchen with stock cabinet sizes and laminate counters lands at the bottom, while a kitchen with an island, custom upper fillers, quartz, and a tile backsplash in Alamo Heights or Terrell Hills lands higher.
The price we put in writing is the price before we start. That means the part cost, the labor, any cabinet adjustment work, cleanup, and the workmanship warranty are all in one number. We cover the install for 365 days from completion under our Done Right promise. If anything we touched fails in that window, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a hinge or a slide is a legitimate DIY job if you’re comfortable with a drill, a tape measure, and the patience to match the screw hole spacing exactly. Where we see it go wrong is with door alignment. If two or three hinges are worn, a homeowner replaces one, adjusts it by eye, and now the whole cabinet row looks crooked. A professional sets the reveal with a straightedge and checks that every door on the run opens to the same angle.
The parts we’d tell you not to handle yourself are anything involving the gas strut lifts on CWS upper cabinet lift-up doors. Those struts are under stored tension. If you pry one off without releasing it correctly, that metal bracket can fly hard enough to hurt someone. Dishwasher panel integration is another one. If your CWS cabinetry has a dishwasher-mounted front panel, the mounting is precise, half a millimeter off and the panel rubs the surrounding frame. That’s a job for someone who’s done it before. Call us at (254) 269-5071 and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a 20-minute fix or a replacement.
FAQs

Hinges and slides in a CWS kitchen typically last 12 to 18 years in San Antonio, and thermofoil door faces often fail earlier, within 8 to 15 years, because our heat and humidity cycles are tougher than the climate those cabinets were originally engineered for. A well-maintained cabinet box can last 30 years or more. Call (254) 269-5071 for an honest assessment of whether your kitchen is worth repairing.
Some parts can, some can’t. A stripped hinge screw hole can be doweled and redrilled, and a sagging door can be re-hung. But a delaminated thermofoil door cannot be glued back together, and a cracked soft-close mechanism is done. We’ll tell you which one you have before quoting anything.
A hinge or slide replacement on one cabinet run takes an hour or two. Replacing a full set of doors and drawer fronts is a two to four day job. A full kitchen remodel runs four to eight weeks depending on countertop fabrication lead times. We’ll put the timeline in writing with the price.
Our trucks carry the most common 35mm and 26mm concealed hinges, full-extension drawer slides in multiple lengths, soft-close mechanisms, and an assortment of matching screws and mounting plates, so a single-run repair often happens the same day. For larger orders or specialty finishes, we source through our cabinetry partners, including KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone, when refacing or replacing larger runs. If we have it on hand, you’ll know before we arrive.
