PGT Windows & Doors: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
We stock and install PGT-compatible replacement parts for windows and doors throughout San Antonio, with most hardware swaps running $150 to $600 installed and full unit replacements between $800 and $2,500 depending on size and series. A technician can be at your door with the correct part matched to your frame sticker or hinge stamp in as little as one business day. Most owners discover a failed part the hard way: a window that won’t stay open, a sliding door that suddenly drags across the track, or a latch that no longer bites when you throw it at night.
Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT built its reputation on impact-rated windows and doors, and their San Antonio footprint is heavy on the WinGuard, SpectraGuard, and Eze-Breeze lines. WinGuard units use a heavy-gauge aluminum frame with laminated glass, so the balance systems and rollers are built to carry more weight than a standard residential window. If you can read the white sticker on the frame edge or top rail, that label carries the series name, size code, and glass package; if the sticker is gone, a photo of the hinge and lock assembly is usually enough for us to identify the part before we head out. Not every replacement part has to be OEM. PGT uses industry-standard keepers, roller assemblies, and balance cartridges on many series, so a quality aftermarket match often costs 30 to 40 percent less than the factory-branded piece. But WinGuard hardware is where we recommend staying OEM: the geometry is specific and a generic spring or keeper on an impact-rated sash can create a weak point the manufacturer never intended.
One compatibility gotcha we see often in San Antonio: a SpectraGuard sliding door from 2012 and one from 2019 look identical from the outside, but the roller height changed mid-production. If you order the earlier roller style for a later door, the panel sits low and scrapes the track. We check the date code on the frame before quoting so you’re not buying a part twice.

Signs Your PGT Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Window won’t stay up without a prop. The balance cartridge or spiral balance has lost tension. On PGT single-hung units, this is almost always a worn spring inside the balance tube, not the sash itself. On a sliding window, it means the roller or track has worn and the sash is fighting friction rather than gliding.
- Sliding door drags or grinds. The adjustable steel wheels on the bottom rail eventually flatten under San Antonio heat and dust, and the door rides on the aluminum frame instead of the rollers. Left alone, it will score the track and turn a $60 roller job into a track replacement.
- Lock or latch won’t engage cleanly. The multipoint lock strip or keeper gets out of alignment when the panel settles, or the gear mechanism inside the lock body is grittier than it should be. Impact-rated PGT patio doors have a two-point or three-point lock that anchors the panel at the top and bottom; when one point fails, the door still half-locks, which is why it often goes unnoticed.
- Water or air sneaking through a closed window. The wool pile weatherstrip along the sash or the bulb gasket on a swing door has compressed, or the sweep on a sliding door bottom has torn. San Antonio’s dry heat hardens these seals faster than coastal climates, and a failed seal on an impact window also means you’re losing the air-tight rating.
- Crank operator spins without moving the sash. On casement and awning windows, the gear teeth strip inside the operator housing. PGT casement units usually use an adjustable friction arm, and a homeowner who keeps cranking once the arm is stuck will burn out the internal gears.

DIY or Call Us?
Honest answer: weatherstrip replacement and cleaning out a track are reasonable weekend jobs if you’re comfortable and careful. But balance systems and sliding-door rollers are a different story. A PGT impact-rated sash can weigh 40 to 80 pounds, and when a balance cartridge releases while a homeowner has their hand inside the frame, the resulting injury is exactly what pushes people onto a ladder of urgent care visits. The risk isn’t theoretical; the tension in those springs is always loaded, even when the window is down. We’d rather you leave the spring-loaded work to someone who handles it without drama. If you’re unsure whether your fix is safe to attempt, call us at (254) 269-5071 and just describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you honestly if it’s simple enough to handle yourself, and if it’s not, we’ll schedule the visit.
FAQs

PGT aluminum frames typically last 20 to 35 years, but the hardware inside, rollers, balances, and seals, usually needs attention around the 8- to 12-year mark because San Antonio’s heat and dust age moving parts faster than coastal air does.
Some can; a stubborn sliding door often just needs the rollers cleaned, adjusted, and lubricated. But stripped gears, collapsed springs, and worn roller wheels are always replaced rather than rebuilt, simply because the rebuild doesn’t last. Call us and we’ll tell you what’s worth saving.
Most single-part replacements take one to two hours on site. A weatherstrip or roller job usually runs under an hour. A full unit replacement can take half a day depending on the opening and trim. We’ll give you a time range before we start, and it’is the time range we keep.
Our trucks carry rollers, balances, latches, and weatherstrip kits for most PGT series. For less common pieces or a specific WinGuard lock body, it’s typically a one- to two-day order. We’ll confirm availability before the visit so you’re not waiting on a return trip.
