Atlas Windows & Doors: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

If you have an Atlas window or door that’s sticking, leaking air, or won’t latch, we stock and install Atlas-compatible replacement parts across San Antonio, with most hardware swaps running $180 to $750 installed depending on the component. The bigger projects, like a full Atlas window replacement, land between $4,500 and $15,000 for a typical San Antonio home. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a window that suddenly takes two hands to open, a door handle that spins without catching, or a draft that wasn’t there last winter.

What surprises people is how often a $40 part is all that stands between a perfectly good Atlas unit and one they’re ready to rip out. Before you replace the whole window, let’s figure out exactly what failed.

Which Atlas Models This Applies To

Atlas windows and doors span several product lines, and the parts are not interchangeable across all of them. The most common Atlas series we see in San Antonio homes are the Atlas 1000 Series (entry-level vinyl), the Atlas 4000 Series (mid-range with better thermal ratings), and the Atlas 6000 Series (higher-end with upgraded hardware and thicker frames). Each series uses different balance systems, roller assemblies, and hinge hardware.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches San Antonio homeowners every time: the balance shoe on a 1000 Series sash is not a direct swap for a 4000 Series shoe, even when the window widths match. You need the series label. Open the sash and look at the spacer bar between the glass panes; Atlas stamps the series number there on most units made after 2008. On doors, check the hinge edge of the slab for a small sticker with the model code. If the label’s gone, measure the sash thickness. The 1000 Series runs 2-5/8 inches, the 4000 sits at 2-3/4, and the 6000 comes in at 3-1/4.

For Atlas parts specifically, we recommend OEM where it matters most: balances, pivot bars, and multi-point lock assemblies. Aftermarket equivalents work fine for handles, sweeps, and weatherstripping, and they often cost 30 to 40 percent less. We’ll tell you which is which before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Atlas Windows & Doors Are Failing

  • The sash drops when you let go. That’s a failed balance system. Atlas uses a block-and-tackle balance on many units, and the cord inside frays over time until it snaps. In San Antonio, the heat accelerates that wear because the nylon cord dries out and gets brittle.
  • The window is suddenly hard to open or close. Usually a worn pivot bar or a broken balance shoe. You’ll feel resistance in one corner first, then the whole sash binds. Forcing it makes the problem worse and can damage the track.
  • You can feel air moving around a closed window or door. Weatherstripping has a real lifespan in Texas: three to five years on a west-facing unit. The heat breaks down the foam and vinyl so it no longer springs back. Then you get drafts, dust, and higher cooling bills.
  • The door handle spins but doesn’t unlatch. Atlas patio doors and entry doors with multi-point locks have a small gearbox inside the handle mechanism. When the gear strips, the handle turns freely. The door is still locked, which is the good news. The bad news is you can’t open it until the gearbox is replaced.
  • Condensation between the glass panes. That’s a failed seal in the insulated glass unit. It never gets better on its own, and in San Antonio’s humidity, it fogs over completely within a season. The fix is glass replacement, not a new window, and Atlas glass packs are orderable.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled living room with built-in shelves around the fireplace

Here’s what we charge in San Antonio for the Atlas repairs we handle most often:

Service Typical Installed Price
Balance replacement (per sash) $180 – $320
Handle set and lock gearbox $220 – $450
Weatherstripping and sweep package $140 – $300
Pivot bar and shoe replacement $160 – $280
Insulated glass replacement $350 – $750
Full Atlas window replacement (per opening) $450 – $1,800 installed

Those prices include the part, the labor, and a written quote before we start. Full window replacement pricing depends on window size, series, and how many units you’re doing at once; a whole-home Atlas replacement for a typical San Antonio house runs $8,000 to $20,000 across 5 to 15 openings. Every repair we do is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost to you.

DIY or Call Us?

Some Atlas issues are checkable in five minutes. A loose handle usually just needs a screwdriver to snug up two set screws. Dirty tracks can make a window feel broken when it isn’t. But balance systems are under tension, and a multi-point lock gearbox means pulling the door slab apart. The springs in a block-and-tackle balance hold enough tension to pinch badly if the sash is removed wrong, and we’ve seen well-meaning DIY attempts turn a $200 balance job into a $600 track replacement.
