Schluter Windows & Doors: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
Schluter-compatible window and door trim, sealing systems, and transition parts typically run $450 – $2,500 installed in San Antonio, and we stock the most commonly failing pieces on our trucks so we can often complete the swap in a single visit. Most homeowners discover a Schluter part has failed when they notice water staining at the base of a door threshold, cracked or lifting trim at tile-to-window transitions, or the vinyl seal pulling away where a shower window meets Kerdi-board. In San Antonio’s heat-and-humidity cycle, the adhesive bond and the flexible PVC itself take a beating: expansion during 100-degree afternoons and contraction during winter cold snaps work the material until it splits or loses its grip.
If you’re reading this because a Schluter edge profile, window reveal, or door transition is cracked, pulling loose, or letting water behind the tile, you’re in the right place. We’ve been repairing and replacing these exact failures in San Antonio homes for years, and we’ll tell you straight what’s fixable, what needs replacement, and what it should cost before you commit to anything. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll help you figure out exactly which part you need.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a tight family of profiles and transition pieces that show up around windows and doors in tiled spaces: Schluter-SCHIENE (the L-shaped edge trim you see at outside corners and where tile meets a window frame), Schluter-DECO (a wider reveal channel often used as a window sill cap or doorway threshold accent), Schluter-VINPRO-S and VINPRO-R (vinyl profiles that cap the raw edge where tile dies into a window opening or door jamb), and Schluter-DILEX (movement joint profiles installed where tile meets a door threshold or changes plane). The part you have will usually have the Schluter name embossed on the face or stamped on the back of the flange. Measure the visible face width in millimeters before you call us: that measurement (6, 8, 10, 12.5 mm and up) is the primary identifier, and mixing widths is the most common ordering mistake we see in San Antonio homes.
One compatibility detail that trips up a lot of San Antonio owners: SCHIENE and DECO are aluminum, but DILEX comes in both PVC and aluminum, and the PVC version is not rated for exterior-facing door thresholds that get direct sun. We see UV-degraded PVC DILEX on west-facing patio doors in neighborhoods like Alamo Heights and Stone Oak all the time. The aluminum version lasts 15 – 20 years in Texas weather; the PVC version in direct sun can embrittle in 6 – 8. When you call, snap a photo of the part and a close-up of the label if it’s still readable, and we’ll tell you over the phone whether OEM Schluter or a correctly matched aftermarket equivalent is the better spend for your situation.

Signs Your Schluter Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Water staining or bubbling paint at the bottom corners of window trim. This usually means the Schluter profile’s adhesive bond has failed and water is wicking behind the tile into the drywall or backer board. You won’t see the leak start; you’ll see the stain grow.
- Visible crack or split running lengthwise along the profile face. In San Antonio, aluminum profiles rarely crack from impact; the failure is usually thermal fatigue from years of expansion and contraction. Once it splits, the profile is done and should be replaced, not caulked over.
- The profile has pulled away from the tile edge, showing a gap of 1/16″ or more. This is the first stage of failure. It starts small, the gap catches grout dust and cleaning residue, and eventually the profile lifts entirely because the thin-set keying channel underneath was never fully packed.
- Gray or chalky white residue on what should be a bright aluminum face. That’s oxidation and UV damage. It doesn’t mean the profile has lost structural strength, but it means the finish will keep degrading. You’ll eventually see pitting, and once pitting starts, replacement is the only clean fix.
- The door threshold profile rocks or clicks when you step on it. This is usually missing or loose fasteners in the channel underneath, or the profile was installed over a substrate that’s since settled. A clicking threshold is not just annoying; it’s the early sign of a profile that will crack at the screw holes.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in the San Antonio market, and these are installed prices, not just part prices:
- Straight SCHIENE or VINPRO edge profile replacement at a window or door jamb: $450 – $850 per opening. Price depends on whether we can remove and reset the surrounding tile cleanly or whether the tile needs rebuilding around the new profile.
- DILEX movement joint at a door threshold: $500 – $1,100 installed. Includes removal of the failed profile, substrate inspection, new profile, and grout or sealant matching.
- Full Schluter reveal system around a larger window or patio door (multi-piece, multiple joints): $900 – $2,500. This is a rebuild, not a swap, and includes any backer board repair needed to give the new profile a proper anchoring surface.
The labor is the bigger line item on most Schluter profile repairs, and that’s honest: the part itself might be $30 – $180, but getting the old one out without destroying the surrounding tile – and getting the new one seated so it won’t fail the same way again – is slow, careful work. Every quote we write tells you the part cost and the labor cost as separate lines before any work starts. And every Schluter-related repair is covered by our written guarantee, with a free return visit if the installation fails within 365 days of completion.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely take the measurement, read the label, and snap clear photos before you call. That alone saves a trip and helps us quote more accurately over the phone. What you should not do is try to pry a Schluter profile off a tiled window or door edge with a screwdriver or chisel. The profile is embedded under the tile edge. Levering against the tile face to get it out is the single fastest way to crack tiles that were otherwise fine, and now your $500 profile repair is a $2,000 tile repair. Schluter profile replacement is not dangerous in the way garage door springs or electrical work are, but it is easy to turn a small job into a big one.
If the profile is loose at one end but still partially bonded, leave it alone and call us. If there’s visible water staining, call us sooner rather than later; damp framing behind tile grows mold fast in San Antonio humidity, and that changes the scope. Call (254) 269-5071 and Isaac will help you sort through what you’re seeing before we ever schedule a visit.
FAQs

Aluminum Schluter profiles typically last 15 – 20 years in San Antonio’s climate, while PVC profiles in shaded interior applications can last 10 – 15 years. PVC exposed to direct afternoon sun, especially on west-facing exterior door thresholds, often fails in 6 – 8 years in our heat. That’s a real-world lifespan for this market, not a national average. If yours failed earlier than that, the usual culprit is incomplete thin-set packing at the original install, not the profile material itself. Call (254) 269-5071 for an exact quote on your replacement.
No; a cracked or structurally split Schluter profile cannot be repaired, because the flange that anchors it under the tile edge loses its grip permanently once the profile face separates. You’ll see products marketed as tile edge repair epoxies, but they fail again within a season in San Antonio heat because the thermal expansion keeps working the crack. Replacement is the fix. Call us for an honest assessment before you waste money on a repair kit.
A straight single-profile replacement at one window or door jamb usually takes us 3 – 5 hours on site, including tile removal around the profile, substrate inspection, thin-set curing, and the new profile installation. A larger multi-piece reveal system rebuild around a sliding door can run a full day or a day and a half. We’ll give you a written timeframe with the written price, so you know exactly what to expect before we start. Call (254) 269-5071 for a free estimate.
We stock the most commonly failing Schluter profiles in San Antonio on our trucks: SCHIENE and DECO in the most-used finishes and face widths, plus DILEX in aluminum and PVC. Less common profiles and custom lengths are ordered and usually arrive within 3 – 5 business days. When you call, we’ll tell you over the phone whether your part is on the truck or needs to be ordered, before anyone schedules a visit. Also note, Mason Remodeling Co San Antonio is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Schluter Systems, but we install and match their profiles every week. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone materials on projects where those brands are specified. Call (254) 269-5071 and we’ll identify your exact profile together.
